The six stages
- Plan in writing. Goals, audience and pages, using the planner.
- Gather content. Words, photos and prices. Give it room if the words and photos do not exist yet.
- Choose a builder or platform and agree the quote. Allow time for questions and comparing quotes.
- Design and build. Check the time against the builder's own schedule.
- Check everything. Phones, computers, forms, links and legal pages, using the launch checklist.
- Fix, publish and announce.
About the shares
The starting shares (10, 20, 10, 35, 15 and 10) are an example, chosen so the stages add up to a sensible whole. They do not describe how long these stages take in general. If your content is already written, shrink that stage; if a builder tells you the build takes six weeks, set the shares so the build stage covers six weeks.
The shares do not need to add up to 100. The roadmap divides the time between start and launch in proportion to whatever numbers you enter. Set a stage to zero to leave it out.
Turning dates into commitments
A roadmap is only useful if the people involved agree to it. Share the downloaded file with your builder and anyone writing content, and ask whether each date is realistic for them. Put the content deadline and launch date in your plan.
