Website launch checklist

Work through these 27 checks before your website goes live, ticking each one yourself. The count updates as you go, and you can download the list with your ticks. It records what you have checked; it does not test the site for you.

After launch

Ticks are kept only while this page is open. Nothing is recorded by the site.

How to use it

Go through the groups in order. Some checks take a minute, such as sending a test message through the contact form. Others take longer, such as reading every page on a phone. If a check does not apply to your site, for example booking when you have none, tick it and note that in the downloaded file.

Agree the list with whoever builds the site before the build starts, so "ready to launch" means the same thing to both of you.

Sources behind the 27 checks

Each of the 27 checks follow the launch guide, which links to the sources behind them: the ICO on privacy and cookies, the 2015 regulations on company details, the National Cyber Security Centre on email security, the W3C's accessibility guidelines and Google's documentation on titles and search. The legal pages guide and domain guide go into more detail.

Limits of a hand-ticked list

The checklist does not scan your site, measure speed or test accessibility. Ticking "the site can be used with a keyboard alone" means you tried it, not that a tool confirmed it. For a fuller accessibility check, follow the W3C's WCAG 2.2 guidelines or ask a specialist.

Your privacy

Ticks last only while the page is open. The site records nothing.

Set a date for the first review

Put a review date in the diary a few weeks after launch. The roadmap can place it after your launch date.
