Free website planning tools

Five free tools help you plan a website in writing: a planner workbook, a budget estimator, a feature selector, a launch checklist and a roadmap. They run in your browser, store nothing, need no account, and save their results as text files you can keep or send to a builder.

The five tools

  • Free tool

    Website planner

Goals, audience, pages and launch details, saved as a text plan.

  • Free tool

    Budget estimator

Your own rates and hours added up, with first year running costs.

  • Free tool

    Feature selector

Sixteen features sorted into must have, later and not needed.

  • Free tool

    Launch checklist

Twenty seven checks to tick by hand before the site goes live.

  • Free tool

    Website roadmap

Six planning stages spread between your start and launch dates.

How they work

Each tool is a form on a web page. The work happens in your browser using JavaScript: nothing you type is sent to this site, and nothing is stored once you close the page. When you have an answer you want to keep, press the download button to save a plain text file, or copy the text into an email.

Plain text was chosen on purpose. It opens on any computer or phone, prints cleanly and can be pasted into whatever a builder uses.

Which tool to use first

Use them in the order of the planning steps:

  1. The planner for goals, audience, pages and launch details.
  2. The feature selector to sort features into must have, later and not needed.
  3. The budget estimator to add up hours, rates and running costs.
  4. The roadmap to spread the work between a start date and a launch date.
  5. The launch checklist to work through before going live.

What the tools do not do

They do not test a website, check accessibility or search settings automatically, or give prices. The budget estimator starts with placeholder figures that you replace with your own. The launch checklist records the ticks you make by hand. If a tool seems to need more than that, the matching guide explains the decision behind it.

Using the tools without JavaScript

If JavaScript is switched off, each tool page still shows its full content as plain HTML: the planner's questions, the estimator's hour boxes, all sixteen features, all 27 checklist items and the six roadmap stages. A note explains what needs scripts, such as totals and downloads, and the buttons that need them are hidden. You can answer on paper and use the guides alongside.

Start with the planner

Answer the planning questions one section at a time and save the plan as a text file.
