Website budget estimator

Type in a day rate and an hours figure for each piece of the build, then add the running costs you have been quoted. The estimator adds everything up for the first year. The starting figures are placeholders, not market prices, and the result is not a quote.

Your rates

These starting values are placeholder assumptions, not market prices. Replace them with figures from the quotes you receive.

A cushion for changes you have not foreseen. Set it to zero to leave it out.

Build work, in hours

Untick anything your site does not need. Hours are your own estimates.

Running costs for the first year

Enter the prices you have been quoted. They start at zero because they vary by provider.

This is arithmetic on the figures entered; any starting values you left alone are placeholder assumptions. It is not a market price and not a quote from us.

The sums run on your device. Your figures are not sent anywhere or saved.

About the starting figures

The estimator opens with a day rate of £400, a seven hour day, a 15 percent contingency and some hour estimates. Those numbers are placeholder assumptions so the table is not empty. They are not an average, a market price or our price. Replace them with figures from real quotes as soon as you have them.

Running costs start at zero because they depend entirely on which providers you choose. Check each provider's current price and enter it.

How the sums work

  • The hourly rate is the day rate divided by the hours in a working day.
  • Each ticked line is its hours multiplied by the hourly rate. Building pages and adding content are multiplied by the number of pages as well.
  • Contingency is a percentage of the build work.
  • Monthly running costs are multiplied by twelve; yearly ones are added as they are.
  • If you tick the VAT box, 20 percent is added to the whole total. GOV.UK lists 20 percent as the standard rate. Tick it only if your quotes will include VAT.

Using it with real quotes

When a builder sends a quote, put their figures in: either their day rate and hours, or their fixed price split across the lines. Download each version, so you can compare quotes side by side. If one quote is far lower, check which lines it leaves out.

The budget guide explains each part of a budget and how to compare quotes fairly.

Your privacy

The sums run in your browser. Your figures are not sent to this site or saved.

Compare quotes on the same lines

Run the estimator once per quote and download each one, then compare the files line by line.
